KunstbruderThe Brotherhood of the Art of the Fight |
Kunstbruder is a Boston based group for studying the German tradition of medieval martial arts. We are currently studying the tradition of Lichtenauer as part of our effort to preserve our heritage, and sharpen our minds and bodies. And enjoy ourselves.
Kunstbruder roughly translates as Brotherhood of the Art from 15th century German. The "art" that we practice is "The Art of the Fight" or "The Art of Defense".
In affiliation with Forteswordplay we have expanded our work to include research and interpretation of the Lichtenauer tradition.
We are now focusing our research on the messerfecthen and sword and shield tradition. Currently we are working on a complete interpretation of Leckuchners messerfechten manual. We continue to work on longsword and other aspects of the Lichtenauer tradition, such as ringen (wrestling) with Forte.
Our objective is a martial understanding and application of the art of defense of Medieval Europe. We seek to do this with as much historical accuracy as is practically possible. Whenever possible, period accurate equipment and methods are used. When this is not possible the preference is for equipment or methods that preserve the feel and appearance of the Medieval period.
We are working from a translation of the Leckuchner and the Lebkommer (translated by Shcielhau.org). By a thorough understanding of the single sword tradition we will develop an understanding of the sword and buckler and sword and shield combat systems.
We are developing a variety of pieces of practice equipment that will facilitate practical and effective training.
